State Archaeologist Chip McGimsey will discuss the ancient Troyville archaeological site on Thursday, Aug. 24, at 5 p.m. in the Union Museum of History and Art-Discovery Place, 211 N. Main Street, Farmerville. Admission is free.
Located in Catahoula Parish, the earthen wall and nine mounds at the site were once a prominent part of the landscape. Early explorers described the largest mound or "Great Mound" as being 82 feet high, the tallest mound known in Louisiana. The Troyville earth-works were built between 100 BC and AD 700. Only portions of the mounds and wall remain.
This event is part of the series of speakers scheduled for the D'Arbonne Diggers Archaeological Club, a program of the museum. Dr. McGimsey's talk is open to the public.
