Mark your calendar for Archaeology Site presentation, when Discovery Place-Union Museum of History and Art will host the next in series of presentations.Presentation at the Union Museum of Art and History on Thursday, March 21, 2024, by Dr. Gary L. Stringer, Professor Emeritus of Geology at the University of Louisiana at Monroe. Altun Ha is not as large as some of the Mayan sites in Mexico, but it is unique and special in many ways. The site is approximately 5 km (3.1 miles) in areal extent and was occupied from approximately 900 BC to 1000 AD. The site has two plazas and seven temples including the “Temple of the Masonry Altars.” This temple is the largest at the site at approximately 16.5 m (54 feet) in height and contained elaborate human burials. The largest and best-known solid jade Mayan artifact was also recovered from the temple. Each of the temples will be explored as well as the jade artifact (the Jester god) in the presentation.Date and Time
